Spring Decor – an unconventional Easter decoration

This week we are looking at Easter Craft Ideas. I love Spring. I do say this about all four seasons in the build up to their arrival; Spring though is a little different for me. Personally, I have a birthday and Mothers Day to celebrate. Then there are the lighter evenings to look forward to. Even waking and starting the day at silly o’clock is more pleasant when it’s not so dark and gloomy. We seem to emerge from the comfort (or ‘hygge’) of our homes and shed many layers of clothing in grateful appreciation of a warmer sun and longer days. Our homes extend to the garden and meals and entertaining take on a different feel. And then of course there is Easter. For me no better symbol of the start of something new. Perhaps more of a New Year feel than the cold and darkness January offers. A time when our gardens visibly offer signs of new life and hope. And of course, countless opportunities to brighten up the home. And that’s what todays post is all about. Spring decor in the home. First though, an Easter story…

When my children were small, we would take part in a Good Friday workshop at our local church. Messy craft play on a grand scale for the younger children, whilst the older boys and girls dramatised the story of the crucifixion for an eagerly awaiting audience of parents, grandparents, family and friends. It was a day I looked forward to all year. A day where no matter your age, there was an event to get involved in. It was also a place to make friends with other like-minded souls and some of my greatest friendships grew from those days. And when we left the church later that morning, we would do so with a story of hope and anticipation in our minds and tummies full with hot cross buns and endless mugs of tea. Our arms would carry home paintings and easter crafts and it was the most perfect of starts to the long weekend. So I set my mind back to some of the great Easter craft ideas that I used to love…

Back home we would use our creative pretties to decorate our Easter tree and home and I guess without even realising, we were creating a spring decor all of our own. To this day I still have a blown egg I painted with the children which surely must qualify as vintage itself. So here’s some great Easter craft ideas for your home…

Our Easter tree was always simple: Tied ends of ribbons on twiggy branches with delicate eggs and decorations to complete the pretty look. Now of course the children are grown up themselves, so I get to be a little more creative on my own. This year my spring decor took on a different look and instead of a twiggy tree, Doris got all dressed up for the occasion.

And with so many pretties left over, I decorated the walls and surface around Doris to make a little more of a statement.

In an aim to fulfil my quest for endless opportunities to decorate in our home, Mr M has fixed some vintage and new hooks to a wall in the hallway for me. Previously messy coats and scarves had adorned this wall. Now the coats are confined to the utility room and the space has afforded me more opportunity for more home decor. Spring decor for now. I am fast running out of ‘surfaces’ to decorate and am hoping this new spot will be updated and changed, as the calendar year rolls around.

And on a recent visit to Kempton Park Antiques I bagged this beautiful and detailed oil canvas which has joined my spring corner and is sure to be a valued piece in future home decor.

I read recently that creative people are a little unconventional in their ways. More accurately they were described as a little mad. The look on my family’s faces when they saw Doris‘ latest get up, would suggest they might agree. A little bit mad perhaps; a lot more grateful though.

One thing in particular I am grateful for is my family and I shall be taking a two-week ‘spring break’ away from blogging, to spend more time with them. Master M is home from university and planning a years work placement away from home, so that needs a bit of Mum help. And Little Miss has several very exciting projects at work going on and she could do with a hand too. Mr M and I are hoping for a few days out and time spent in the garden…if the weather allows. And I would like to make a few changes to the look of the blog and for that, there is much research and reading to do.
